The problem with platform-specific apps
Most workout apps make you pick a side. The iOS version is polished, the Android version lags a release behind, and the web version โ if it exists โ is a stripped-down afterthought with no offline support. Switch phones mid-cycle or want to review your history on a laptop, and your training data either doesn't travel or needs an export-import ritual.
The deeper issue is lock-in. When your data lives inside a platform-specific app, the exit cost is your entire training history. Some apps make export genuinely hard โ so the longer you stay, the harder it becomes to leave.
There's a cleaner path: a workout tracker that runs natively in the browser, works offline, installs on any home screen, and keeps a single history synced across every device โ no store download required to get started.
How SammaGym works on every device today
SammaGym is a Progressive Web App (PWA) โ a website that behaves like a native app. Open app.sammagym.com in Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android, or any desktop browser, and you get the full experience. No app store, no account required to explore, nothing to download first.
- Works on any browser. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge โ all supported. Modern browser, app runs.
- Offline-first. Workout data is stored locally on your device using IndexedDB. Log a full session with zero internet. Data syncs when you're back online.
- Full-screen on mobile. Once installed to your home screen, the app opens without browser chrome โ address bar and toolbars gone. Looks and feels native.
- Rest timer on the lock screen. The inter-set countdown stays visible on your lock screen so you don't need to unlock your phone to check it.
- Auto-regulated progression. After each session, SammaGym suggests whether to add reps, add weight, or hold steady โ using double progression and reps-in-reserve (RIR) feedback.
- Previous set shown inline. Last session's weight and reps appear in grey beneath each active set while you log โ the pattern popularised by Hevy.
- Cardio GPS. Log runs, walks, or rides with distance, pace, and a route map. All in the same app, no switching required.
Because the app runs in the browser, there's nothing to update manually. Improvements ship server-side and are available the next time you open the app โ no pending App Store updates, no version fragmentation across devices.
Installing on iPhone and Android (home screen)
Adding SammaGym to your home screen takes under a minute and gives you a full-screen, offline-capable icon that launches without a browser. The steps differ slightly by platform.
On iPhone (Safari required): Open app.sammagym.com in Safari. Tap the Share button (box with an upward arrow at the bottom of the screen). Scroll down and tap "Add to Home Screen", then "Add" in the top-right corner. The SammaGym icon appears on your home screen. For a full walkthrough, see our guide on adding a gym app to your home screen without downloading from the App Store.
On Android (Chrome): Open app.sammagym.com in Chrome. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. Tap "Add to Home screen" or "Install app", then confirm. The icon appears on your home screen and the app opens full-screen from then on.
Once installed, the experience is indistinguishable from a native app for almost every use case. Push-capable notifications, offline data, lock-screen timer โ all of it, no App Store or Google Play required.
One history across all your devices
The core promise of a cross-platform workout app is that your training history follows you. SammaGym delivers this through cross-device sync: when you're online, data writes to your account in the cloud. Open the app on a different device and that history is already there.
Sync is additive and conflict-safe. Log a session on your phone while offline and another on a tablet that had internet โ both sessions appear in your history when the phone reconnects. No data is lost from either device.
- Offline-first, cloud-backed. Your device is always the primary source. The cloud is a backup and sync layer, not a hard requirement.
- No manual export/import. Switching from iPhone to Android, or adding a tablet? Sign in and your history is there.
- No subscription required for sync. Cross-device sync is included free โ there's no paid tier that unlocks it.
- Platform-agnostic. Your data isn't tied to iOS or Android. It lives in your account, not in a platform-specific store.

Native iOS and Android apps: coming soon
To be straight about it: SammaGym's native iOS and Android apps are in development and not yet available on the App Store or Google Play. The web app โ which installs to your home screen and works offline โ is live right now and covers the full feature set.
When the native apps launch, they'll share the same account and training history as the web app. Start using SammaGym today through the browser and your data will be there when the native apps arrive. No starting over.
The web app isn't a placeholder or a limited preview โ it's the real product, running on the same codebase with the same features. Auto-regulated progression, GPS cardio, rest timer, progress charts: all of it works in the browser today. The native apps will add deeper platform integrations (HealthKit, Health Connect) when they ship.
